Choral scholarship information sheet
St Helen is a beautiful and quaint church located in the Centre of York with a modest regular congregation. As part of the City Centre churches, St Helen has a regular Eucharist service on Saturdays at midday to offer a service to both tourists and residents of York.
There are four choral scholars and one organ scholar that are all generously supported by a local charitable trust. It requires scholars to be over 17 but under 25 years of age
As part of the service, scholars sing an Introit, Anthem and Congregational Mass Setting as well as hymns. There are opportunities for extra services throughout the year remunerated by the PCC at £40 per service.
Choral scholars sing 10 Saturday services per term remunerated at £400 per term, a total of £1200 across the academic year paid in arrear in three instalments. Choral scholars may miss a maximum of 4 services per term during which a suitable deputy must be found and paid by the scholar(either after receiving payment at the end of term or after services, up to the discretion of the scholar).
The provisional date for auditions will be 20th June at St Helen during which applicants will sing a short piece with the other current scholars as well as an unaccompanied piece of their choosing. There will then be a short interview conducted by Church Warden, Anthony Hammersley and Assistant Curate, Rev. Kingsley Boulton and Ella Seymour.
Please complete the application form and email to Ella Seymour and Anthony Hammersley no later than midday on Friday 12th June.
