Welcome to the website of the parish of St Helen with St Martin York

A distinctive feature of this Parish  is that it has two churches. St Helen is the Parish Church and St Martin is a Chapel of Ease. Both have regular weekly services. The style of worship in each is quite different. The parish is at the historic centre of the City. It comprises parts of 3 streets and St Helen’s Square which together form the principal shopping area of York

STOP PRESS for November 2020 Lockdown.

From 5 November services have been suspended for 4 weeks and the churches remain closed. Then we hope to return to the position set out in the paragraph below:-

Normally both Churches are open daily for private prayer, meditation and sightseeing. Apart from the worship at services they are used for a variety of activities. Due to Covid-19 restrictions both churches are closed to visitors on most days. Our  midday Eucharist at St Helen every Saturday has recommenced with Covid-19 safety arrangements in place. The 1215 Eucharist usually held at St Martin on Wednesdays has also recommenced but currently is relocated to St Helen. This is temporary to accommodate Cards for Good Causes operations at St Martin in a Covid-19 safe environment. The service will return to St Martin in the New Year. We also hold a short reflective "Music and Prayers" service at St Helen every Wednesday at 4.30pm. See our Facebook for details of services, online services and any limited opening times.

Information in red correct at 5 November 2020

The parish is a registered charity No.1153456

Here is our current  Mission Statement

We exist to reveal Christ through worship and loving service.

Our churches offer Christian hospitality, care and hope.

St Helen’s and St Martin’s are, for everyone, sacred places where worship to God is offered.

St Helen’s is committed to contributing to the life of the city.

St Martin’s promotes peace and reconciliation.

The parish  shares a Priest in Charge with three adjacent parishes. These are All Saints Pavement, St Denys and St Olave. We collaborate as the York City Centre Churches group and our shared vision is to work together to serve all the people of our parishes whether residents, visitors or students and to be part of the life of the city and beyond. The four parishes have a magazine - Touchbase- which can be found on that site.

Donations. Our overheads and expenses continue but our income has collapsed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Please support the parish and its work. More information on how to do this is on our GIVING page.
