2022 concert programme

2022 CONCERT PROGRAMME AT ST HELEN

Our summer season embraces the York Festival of Ideas in early June. This list is correct as at 8 February 2022.

Saturday 19 March   The Chapter House Youth Choir from York start our season with a choral concert at 3pm.

Monday 2 May  A Bank Holiday Organ Extravaganza at 2pm. Our Director of Music and principal organist Phillip Sangwine provides a musical celebration of the coming summer.

Thursday 2 June  A Bank Holiday Organ Extravaganza at 2pm. Our deputy organist Philip J Paul celebrates the Platinum Jubilee.

Friday 17June    Soprano Louise Alp returns at 12.30pm with a beautiful programme featuring works by Samuel Barber and Mendelssohn, a collection of folk songs, and pieces by Vaughan Williams in celebration of his 150th birthday. Louise will be accompanied by Matthew Lazenby.

Saturday 18 June   An evening concert at 7.30pm celebrating pipe and tabor given by the Taborers Society and the Arbeau dancers. Medieval music and dance as part of the 2022 International Pipe & Tabor Festival.

Friday 24 June  International star Galina Vale, the “Diva de la Guitarra”, returns to give another spectacular performance in costume embracing her amazing repertoire of classical, modern and Flamenco pieces. This will be her fourth appearance at St Helen. The concert starts at 12.30pm but come early – the last two have produced a full house!

Friday 1 July  The Union Chancel Choir from Irmo, South Carolina, USA on tour in the UK give a concert at 12.30pm. Their repertoire embraces secular and sacred music, mostly from the 20th century and much with an American flavour. Some pieces a capella and others accompanied.

Wednesday 3 August.  A lunchtime concert at 1200  given by the 30 singers of the Nottingham Youth Choir from Sherwood Park Alberta , Canada. The programme will be a combination of sacred and secular pieces sung a capella.

Monday 29 August  A Bank Holiday Organ Extravaganza at 2pm. William Campbell provides a musical celebration inspired by the big events of 2022. Formerly an intern at Guildford Cathedral. William is our Organ Scholar who also plays regularly at Leeds Minster and Bradford Cathedral.

Friday 16 September. A concert at 2pm given by Havfreune (the Mermaids) a Norwegaian Choir visiting the UK.

 Unless specified the events are FREE but we ask for a donation when you leave. This helps with concert costs and church upkeep.
